Abdominal wall reconstruction is an advanced and complex surgical procedure used to treat large or complex defects of the abdominal wall.
What is involved with an abdominal wall reconstruction?
The surgery is used to strengthen a weakened or damaged abdominal muscle and to restore function of the abdominal wall.
When is abdominal wall reconstruction needed?
Abdominal wall surgery is recommended for patients who have large, advanced, or complex/recurrent hernias or for those who have suffered trauma to the abdomen.
What is a complex hernia?
A complex hernia usually occurs at the site of where an earlier hernia has been repaired and is also known as a recurrent hernia. When there are repeated attempts to repair a hernia, the surrounding tissue can become weakened or stretched, which may need it to be augmented or replaced.
A large hernia of the abdominal wall can also result in a deformity occurring which can require a complex hernia repair.
How is abdominal wall reconstruction done?
Abdominal wall reconstruction surgery is done under a general anaesthetic and can be performed as an “open” surgical procedure or as a “minimally invasive” endoscopic procedure. The type of surgery needed is dependent upon the complexity of the surgery. It typical involves reconstruction and repositioning of the abdominal muscles and the fascia, and the insertion of mesh.
The surgery can be anywhere from two hours to eight hours in duration. Different aspects that affect the duration time of the surgery include:
- Complexity and size of the hernia
- Patient’s age
- Other medical conditions
What is the recovery period from abdominal wall reconstruction?
Most patients will require an overnight or two nights hospital stay after abdominal wall surgery. Recovery varies from 2- 5 weeks for normal day-to-day activities, and a return to regular exercise can be expected around 6 weeks after the procedure.
Experience and expertise are important
Due to the complexity of abdominal wall reconstruction, the experience and the expertise of the surgeon is important. Dr Sergey Fedorine is highly experienced in performing abdominal wall reconstruction surgery.
